Innovative Design of "RDSO TRAIL COACH ( LHB SLR ) WITH UNDERSLUNG DG SET"

RDSO TRAIL COACH ( LHB SLR ) WITH UNDERSLUNG DG SET

Hope you all have read the previous article "POWER SUPPLY SYSTEM IN INDIAN RAILWAY COACHES"
and " DEVELOPMENT HISTORY OF POWER GENERATION IN "LHB" AC/NAC"

There are mainly three types of power supply system namely SELF GENERATING , END ON GENERATION and HEAD ON GENERATION.

CONVENTIONAL DESIGN OF GENERATOR AND LUGGAGE CAR

NEW DESIGN OF GENERATOR AND LUGGAGE CAR

Now-days NON AC coaches are also introduced in the LHB rakes that results in less power consumption. RCF comes with a very innovative design for these types of rakes which have EOG( End on Generation) system. The GENERATOR CAR cum LUGGAGE CAR for these rakes has been redesigned as the existing one is OVER CAPACITY. The diesel-generating set  is now mounted under the under frame of the COACH.This results in more space and load capacity available for the LUGGAGE , previously its capacity is 3.9 TONNES which now has been increased.
The new car has Two luggage cabins with capacity of 3.9 & 11 Tonnes.

LUGGAGE CAR WITH UNDERSLUNG DA(DIESEL GENERATOR)

The radiators are placed on the roof of the coach and the control unit of the generator  is moved to the guard's cabin. The luggage space and quantity is increased, approximately double compared to previous one. The major advantage of the design is that the engine is air cooled and also the radiator does not need fan for cooling as it is directly cooled by air.

HYBRID BOGIE USED FOR LUGGAGE AND POWER CAR
Due to dense load Hybrid bogie are used for this coach as it is more reliable than the previous one. It can bear more load than ICF bogie.

FUEL TANK FOR DIESEL GENERATOR
CAPACITY OF FUEL TANK - 1540× 2 litre

DIESEL ENGINE is manufactured by CUMMINS and ALTERNATOR by KIRLOSKAR

SPECIFICATION OF DIESEL ENGINE & ALTERNATOR
  • 6 cylinder , In-Line
  • 4 stroke engine
  • Turbocharged
  • PRIME duty (applicable for supplying power to varying electrical load for unlimited hours)
  • 315 BHP
  • Fuel consumption @100% load - 61.4 Ltr/Hr
  • 500 KVA
  • 750 V , 1500 RPM
  • 3 PHASE , STAR config.

This new E.O.G for running mixed rake ( AC/NAC) is a better option than S.G as S.G design is not yet successful. One of the major advantage of underslung generator cum luugage car that it make more space and capacity  avialable for the luggage car.Hence more luggage can be accomodated in the same car only.
Well, it has got some disadvantage also as the generating set and underframe 'roaring' may produce unlikely vibrations which might  result in failure of this design. Also the generating set (diesel engine and alternator) are exposed and hence are more prone to outside damage.

Firstly, these redesigned GENERATOR CAR(E.O.G) cum LUGGAGE CAR will run on trail basis. The very first power car of the same  will be ready for trial by august or september this year.
