Diesel train for Indian Railways - the WDG5

These are the main pictures of # 50001, the model WDG5 train at DLW, Varanasi. At 5,500 HP, this is the most intense diesel train to be ever constructed in India. The train is prepared, with the exception of the RRT (Real Road Test) freedom from CRS. The train or the arrangement is named Bheem, after the solid Pandav sibling from epic of Mahabharat. The loco has a 20 cylinder EMD prime mover and an AC-AC transmission.

WDG5 is gotten from SD80MAC by EMD. Diesel Loco Works, Varanasi, India is authorized to fabricate WDG4 (SD70MAC) and WDG5 (SD80MAC).

Because of lower pivot load in India (21-tons), improvement of WDG5 had slowed down. Presently the pivot load has expanded to 22.5 tons (and soon going to be 25-tons or higher), first WDG5 was inherent joint effort with EMD. The 20-710 force plant originates from EMD with adjustments conveying 5,500 HP with 5,250 HP at wheels.

I enjoyed simple design of catches around Engineer's work area. In India, Long Hood Front (LHF) and SHF driving is regular as they don't have turn tables (any longer) and no wyes, either. So there are two arrangements of work area top controls.

This loco was the first to give can however since there are no tank release offices, it is constrained to urinal as it were. I was baffled. Amid my more youthful days, I didn't require a can for peeing while pulling cargo train. It was nature's call and nature helped me. With nobody by track side, I couldn't be charged for obscene open presentation.
